She wore white to bed. A sheer gown of cotton that clung to her gentle curves and exposed the rose hue of her skin. Leena rolled over. The cotton tangled around her waist. It slipped up to expose her pubic hair. She tugged at the cloth with frustration.
They were drunk downstairs. The whole lot of them swimming in inebriated excitement. She was disgusted by their libatious abandon and lewd laughter. She punched the pillow and buried her face in the worn cloth.
Her disgust was only matched by her jealousy. She wasn't jealous of their fun. Leena wasted no time on alcohol and rowdy behavior. She didn't come to college to explore her sexuality or waste her parent's money. Leena was in the pursuit of knowledge. She had very specific ambitions.
But he was downstairs. It was his party. His birthday. And her stupid roommates were throwing the party. And she had a test tomorrow at 8am. So, even if she wanted to waste her time at their stupid party, she couldn't.
A lock of hair hooked in the bed. Leena pulled the hair free. In the process she pulled a cluster from the roots. She wasn't going to cry but the pain gave her an excuse for tearing up. It also gave an excuse for the wetness that was already there.
Everyone loved Jack. Mostly because Jack loved everyone. He was one of those people that could find good and worth in just about anyone. Jack wasn't cute. He was average in just about every way. He was cursed with curly red hair and a schoolboy face. That was his appeal. His lack of good looks and charming personality put everyone at lease. No one felt threatened by Jack.
She could hear a drunken couple stumble up the stairs to the bathroom. Leena clenched her jaw and toyed with the idea of throwing a fit. They weren't supposed to use the second bathroom. She was sleeping and that meant the upstairs bathroom was off limits. That was the agreement.
The door to the bedroom flew open. Leena blinked at the brightness. The skin on her neck turned red from ire. She slammed her feet on the floor and prepared to lay into the unwanted intruders. With mouth open she heard his voice and froze.
"Hey Leena." Jack said as he drug Sammie to the bed on the other side of the room. "Sorry about this. I think someone gave her tequila."
Leena closed her mouth and tugged at the bottom of her cotton nightie. She watched as he pulled back the covers and laid Sammie's limp body on the bed.
"I found her asleep on the bathroom floor." He said. "Someone said she was throwing up earlier. I guess no one thought of bringing her upstairs when she stopped."
Leena said in a little voice, "How inconsiderate."
He disappeared to the bathroom, to fetch the trashcan, and closed the door behind him when he returned. She watched in the dim light as he put the can next to Sammie's bed.
"The girls said you have to sleep." Jack pulled a chair up next to Sammie's bed. "I wanna watch her for a while. To make sure she's okay. I'll be quiet like a mouse. You just go back to sleep."
Leena lay back down in bed and said, "Okay."
An empty moment passed. Leena watched him in the dark as he watched Sammie. Between his fiery hair and pale skin he fairly glowed in the darkness. Jack slid down in the chair, making himself comfortable, but didn't make a sound.
"I wasn't really asleep." Leena said, the darkness giving her courage.
"Pretty loud, huh?" The chair creaked as he turned. "Sorry about that."
"You don't have to keep apologizing." Leena grimaced at her choice of words.
It was just like her. Here's this guy she likes and she's bossing him around. Just like she bosses everyone around. She was a right dunce. No wonder he didn't like her.
"Bad habit." He said with a chuckle. "It's the people pleaser in me."
"That's why everyone's here." Leena said. "Because everyone likes you."
"It is nice to be liked."
Leena sat up in bed, pulling the sheet up with her, and said "You make it sound like there's a bad side to that."
She heard him stand up and saw him bring the chair over to her bed. Leena twisted the top of the sheet in her clenched hands. Suddenly he was uncomfortably close and she was very aware of how little she was wearing. She wasn't afraid of him or what he might do. She was afraid of herself and what she wanted to do.
"I don't get to speak my mind. Not like you do."
A harsh laugh crackled from Leena. "That hasn't exactly gotten me far in life."
"You have respect. And you don't have to hide who you are."
"I hide sometimes."
"When?"
The momentary silence grew into a long pause.
"See." Jack said. "You can't even come up with an example."
"It's not..." Leena's heart thumped in her chest. She swallowed.
"I never thought I'd see the day." Jack teased. "Leena McKean speechless."
Leena flushed. "Maybe I'm hiding now."
Jack said with a laugh, "There's something you're not saying?"
Her temper flared. "Yes."
"Spit it out." He goaded. "If you're really not say-"
Leena blurted, "Maybe I want you in bed with me."
Jack guffawed. "That's a good one."
"Don't laugh at me." Leena flopped down under the sheet and turned away from him. He continued to chuckle. Leena turned back just long enough to send him an angry look through he darkness. "I said shut up."
She stared at her alarm clock and blinked back tears. This night was getting worse by the moment. She heard Sammie shift in bed. Leena slid a hand under her cheek and closed her eyes.
Her little pity party was interrupted as she felt his weight on her bed and then felt him lay down next to her. Her eyes popped open and her heart went into overdrive. She felt him kick off his shoes and tug at the edge of the sheet so that he was under the cover with her.
He leaned up on one elbow and bent down next to her face. She was breathing so heavily that she almost didn't hear what he said.
"Let it never be said that I let a woman go to sleep angry." He hooked his fingers under the hair over her ear and pushed it out of the way. "It's the people pleaser in me. Rearing its ugly head again."
He leaned his chin against her shoulder and put a hand on her arm. He slid the hand up and down. The touch meant to be soothing, but it sent tingles through to her core.
Leena whispered, "I'm not mad."
"Then turn over." He said with a pat on her arm.
She slid around in the single bed. It was hard not to be close to him. Two bodies maxed out the mattress space. There was no room for distance. She lay on her back and Jack on his side. He put a friendly hand on her stomach. He probably considered it a brotherly touch but she couldn't stop thinking how close his hand was to her most intimate parts.
Their eyes met in the darkness. He smiled kindly. She forced the corners of her mouth up.
"I like how honest you are." Jack said. "I have many friends. But I value our friendship because I know you won't pull any punches."
Tears pooled at the corner of her eyes. "Now you make me feel bad."
"Why?"
"I haven't been completely honest with you."
"About what?"
She forced the words out, "I like you."
"I like you, too."
"No." Leena said with a shake of her head, "A stupid school girl crush kinda like."
He didn't say anything so Leena babbled, "I knew it would hurt our friendship. And I didn't want that. I value what we have too and I hate that by saying-"
"Hey." Jack interrupted. "Hey. It's okay."
He shifted on the bed and removed his hand. Leena felt like a big chasm opened between them. He was still on the bed but he suddenly felt far away.
"You like me." Jack said, as if processing the words. "I didn't expect you to say that."
"Could this just be one of those things I told you in confidence that solidifies our friendship?" Leena begged. "Instead of the thing I told you that ruined it?"
Jack reached over and touched her face. She figured it was another one of those brotherly touches, until he turned her face towards him and leaned down. Leena blinked, stunned, as she felt his lips touch hers. He kissed her gently for a moment and then pulled back.
"I'm sorry." Jack sighed. "I figured it was worth a try."
Leena grappled with reality. She tried to form words on her lips but no sound came out. Did he just kiss her? Maybe she imagined it. But this foreign sensation lingered on her lips. She was super aware of her mouth. She remembered the feeling of his lips on her lips. So she couldn't have imagined it.
"We couldn't know if there was chemistry until we-"
"What? Wait!" Leena sat up. "That wasn't a rejection. That was shock."
Leena shook her head as if shaking the fog from her brain. "You didn't give me any warning. And I didn't ever consider the possibility that you'd ever want to kiss me. Even now, I'm wondering if it really happened."
She could see his smile in the darkness as he said, "I need to give you warning?"
Leena slid back down. She lay perfectly still, with her hands on her stomach, and stared at him.
"Ready now?"
Leena nodded. Jack leaned in again. This time the touch was like a jolt. Her eyes flickered closed as she felt his lips press into hers. His tongue darted out and parted her lips. She reached up grasped the cloth over his arm. He made a sound, a little moan, and she felt like something burst inside her.
He kissed her chastely, with hands on either side of her as support, and Leena went wild. She pressed into him and pulled him closer. She slid a hand under the back of his shirt. She shoved the shirt up, exposing the smooth skin of his back to the air. She reached under the front of his shirt to explore his chest. She pulled at the shirt from front and back, trying to get it off.
He pulled back just enough to say, "Trying to undress me already?"
She took the opportunity to take the shirt completely off.
"You wanna slow down?" Jack asked as she reeled him in again.
"No." Leena said against his lips.
Jack took the invitation at face value. His hands went from chaste to tentative. He slid a hand over her left breast. Leena jerked her head back, away from his mouth, and arched into the touch. The thin cloth wasn't really a barrier. He may as well have touched bare skin. And his touch was like a live wire. It sent current through her, straight to the center of her.
"What was that?" He asked as Leena panted.
Leena said between breaths, "You sure like to talk."
"I'm a considerate lover."
She found her breath and looked over at him.
"Are you okay with this?" Leena searched his face. "Are you okay with where this is going?"
Jack put his hand back in the PG zone. "Are you?"
"Weather this is romance or just a birthday fuck, I have no doubts. I want to be with you. And I won't regret it."
Jack shifted so he was hovering over her. "Leena, you seem to be under the impression that girls are falling at my feet."
"Sure. Everyone likes you."
He shook his head. "Not like this."
"You don't want to be my girlfriend." Leena blushed and grimaced. "I mean, boyfriend."
"Where did you get the impression that I'm not interested," she heard the grin in his voice as he finished, "in being your girlfriend?"
Leena smiled, the kind of smile that happens when a door opens that you hadn't seen before. She put a hand comfortably on his shoulder. She said with laughter in her voice, "You wanna be my girlfriend?"
Jack slid his hand back over her breast and ran his thumb over the nipple. Leena's body reacted accordingly. She went from laughter to tingling and arching in seconds. He bent down to kiss the curve of her shoulder and Leena dug her nails into his arm. He nibbled up her neck and took her earlobe between his teeth. Leena writhed under his attention.
"It doesn't take much with you, does it?" He said into her ear.
Leena moaned. She grabbed at his pants and wrestled off his belt. Jack pulled at her nightgown. They parted only long enough for him to get if off her. It slid up over her warm skin. The moment the cloth was tossed aside, she was desperate to put her bare flesh back in place. She couldn't stand to have any space between their bodies.
She was struggling with the zipper on his pants when Jack pushed her hand away. "Not yet."
She whined as he went to kiss her breast. Jack slid a hand between her thighs. He combed his fingers through her pubic hair. Leena put a hand over his and directed him to her clit. He sucked in her nipple as he slid fingers around her clit. Leena felt like she was going to die.
She tangled her fingers in his hair and grasped at his shoulder. The bed creaked as Jack moved down between her thighs. He replaced his eager fingers with his eager mouth. Jack parted her pussy with the tip of his tongue. Leena spread her knees wide and pressed her pelvis up, to make easier access for his mouth.
He was so attentive and in tune with her signals, that Leena was heading quickly towards climax. With every lap of his tongue he was taking her closer. Leena rocked against the bed. She thrashed under the steady work of his deft mouth.
"Oh." Leena cried out, as the first tingled of bright pleasure brushed up her spine. "Oh. Oh!"
A sound across the room stopped Jack. Leena whined but then heard the noise. Sammie shifted in her sleep and Leena went silent. Sammie sat up. With a loud thud Jack dropped off the opposite side of the bed and into hiding.
"Leen..." Sammie smacked her lips and made a sound of disgust. "Leena?"
Leena jerked the sheet over her nakedness. "Yeah, hon?"
Sammie slurred, "They're still partying?"
"Yeah." Leena said, smoothing the hair from her face and trying to steady her jerky pulse. "Downstairs. They're still partying."
Sammie said as she stumbled from her bed, "Hafta go pee."
The light from the door exposed the hidden boy behind Leena's bed. Sammie was too wasted to notice. Leena laid back down on the bed, still clutching the cotton sheet, and looked at Jack. He smiled up at her. Leena smiled back but with a touch of uncertainty.
Jack leaned up and kissed her. She tangled her fingers tightly in his hair and made sure he kissed her thoroughly. Jack pulled back to motion at the bed.
"Do you think she'd notice...?"
"Yeah." Leena said, her voice full of very real disappointment. "I don't think we can...not tonight, anyway..."
Jack sighed.
Desperation in her voice Leena asked, "Is there anyplace else?"
Jack put a hand on both sides of her face. He made her meet his eyes as he said, "This is not a one time thing."
She looked doubtful, "Really?"
"After that little taste?"
"Any girl-"
"Not the girls I've known. You're voracious. And I'm-"
Leena heard Sammie coming out of the bathroom and shoved Jack back behind the bed. Sammie didn't make it to the bedroom. A moment later they heard the bathroom door slam open and then sounds of retching.
"This is only a secret if you want it to be." Jack said from the floor.
Surprised by his words Leena repeated herself, "Really?"
"You can omit the part where I'm you're girlfriend." Jack said with laughter in his voice. "But the part about you being my girlfriend, I was kinda looking forward to telling that."
"So...I'm you're girlfriend." Leena said. "Right now, I'm you're girlfriend."
Jack nodded.
Leena scrunched up her nose and squeaked, "I'm you're girlfriend."
Leena hit the bed with open palms. "Oh! And we're gonna have sex. Not just one time. But lots of sex!"
"Yes." Jack said laughing. "Much with the sex."
Leena was distracted so she didn't notice Sammie stumble into the doorway. Sammie braced herself against the doorjamb and squinted into the darkness.
"Jack?" Sammie said as she weaved over to her bed.
Jack grabbed his shirt from the floor and stood as he pulled it on.
Sammie slurred, "What're you doing here?"
Leena said quickly, "Let's talk about that in the morning."
"'K" Sammie said as she fell back onto her bed.
Jack went to sit on the bed next to Sammie.
"Leena's my new girlfriend." Jack said as he tucked Sammie in. Sammie made a sleepy sound. Leena's jaw went slack. Jack said to the now faintly snoring Sammie, "She's afraid you'll be jealous."
Leena huffed, "Shut up!"
"Go to bed." Jack told her as he walked to the door. "You've got a test in the morning and a long night after that of the 'more sex' part."
"Happy Birthday." Leena said as she flopped down in bed.
"Best birthday I've had in years." Jack said as he closed the door.
The End.
